Born in 1949, John trained as a structural engineer at Cambridge University. He worked for 20 years as a Director of Ove Arup & Partners, international design consultants, leading project teams in Hong Kong, Bahrain, Qatar, France, and Germany, as well as in the UK.
After leaving Arup in 1994, John was Carillion’s Development Director on a number of large PFI projects in the health, education, and defence sectors, including the redevelopment of GCHQ in Cheltenham.
In 2002, John became Managing Director of Amey’s Investments businesses, and was responsible for a number of successful major PFI and PPP bids. He was also Managing Director of Amey’s Strategic Development Unit, seeking opportunities in new sectors and geographies for both Amey and its Spanish parent, Ferrovial.
John was Chair of the CBI working group on Procurement and PFI, and Chair of the Bradford Local Education Partnership. He has also worked with HM Treasury’s agency, Partnerships UK, advising DCLG on ways to stimulate the housing sector, and was seconded into the Department for Education and Skills on the £45 billion Building Schools for the Future programme.
Over the past 10 years, John has had a number of Non-executive Director roles: with Alumasc plc, a sustainable building products manufacturer; with GB Social Housing plc, an Infrastructure Fund providing long term loans to Housing Associations; with Fortel Services Ltd, a privately owned company providing labour and construction services throughout the UK; and with BWB Regeneration Ltd, a PE-backed owner-managed consulting engineering firm providing a wide range of design services across the UK. John is currently Chair of the Board of the GBSH, Fortel Services, and BWB Regeneration companies, responsible for steering these companies towards successful 3-5 year exit targets.
He is a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and also at ESADE business school in Barcelona. John is a mentor to members of the Cambridge University Entrepreneurs’ Society, which supports post-graduates as they work towards commercialisation of new ideas and technologies.
John is also a Director, and founder shareholder, of the Digital Life Sciences Group (comprising DLS Ltd and Spring Active Ltd, an acumen7 spin-out company), which provides digital access for patients to NHS primary care services, and functional rehabilitation programmes for people with musculoskeletal disorders.
He is Chair of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association, a charitable organisation supporting vocational rehabilitation health professionals in their daily work, and a Director of the Council for Work and Health, which is sponsored by the DWP to promote the values of ‘good work, and good health’. He is a member of the Vocational Rehabilitation Special Interest Group of the BSRM, and a member of the NHS England Economic Growth Working Group, both of which are advising the National Rehabilitation Delivery Board.
John is also a Director on the Board of the Asian Sports Foundation, a UK registered charity with the primary aim of increasing participation and engagement of minority ethnic groups in sports and physical activity.
